Emmanuel Petit Summary
Emmanuel Petit (born 22/9/1970) is a French former football player who played for Monaco, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea. He represented France at international level, and scored the third goal in France's 3-0 victory in the 1998 FIFA World Cup Final.
In 1988, Petit was signed by Arsène Wenger's AS Monaco. He made his debut soon after and played in the 1989 French Cup final. Petit became a regular at Monaco, winning the Cup in 1991 as well as playing in the 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup final. In 1996-97, his final season at Monaco, he captained his side to the Ligue 1 title. Petit joined Arsenal in 1997 where he was partnered with fellow Frenchman Patrick Vieira. The French duo formed a midfield partnership which brought instant success, as Petit won the Double with Arsenal in his very first season. During his time at Arsenal Petit made 118 appearances and scored 11 goals. He then transferred to Barcelona in the summer of 2000 where he remained for a year, before being signed to Chelsea where he played until 2004. Petit announced his retirement from the game in 2005.
In his international career Petit earned 63 caps and scored 6 international goals as well as winning the World Cup and the Euro 2000. He scored twice in the 1998 World Cup, the latter goal happening to be the 1,000th goal in the history of the Fédération Française de Football, and the last World Cup goal of the Twentieth Century.
